Lexus IS (XE30)
Model Years Produced: 2014 to Current
Summary
In car years, the XE30-generation Lexus IS is a dinosaur, but sometimes that’s not a bad thing. The IS has an analog feeling that many of its more modern competitors lack, and although its interior feels somewhat dated, it also is largely gimmick-free and generally has physical controls for its primary functions.
The XE30 IS received two facelifts over the course of its lifespan. The last one occurred in model year 2021 and featured an updated design, while introducing Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, upgraded driver assistance systems, revised suspension, and increased body rigidity. 2022 featured the introduction of the IS 500.
In many ways, the XE30 IS – and especially its IS 500 trim level – is the Japanese equivalent of a modern muscle car when equipped with the F Sport package. It’s loud and goes great in a straight line, but it’s not quite as impressive as its German competitors around corners – the IS is tuned more for comfort than performance. Even so, it looks and sound the part, especially with the 5.0L V8 installed.
Primary Criticisms
Major
- 8-speed transmission feels sluggish and dated compared to modern units from ZF and GM during everyday driving
Minor
- Outdated interior with bad infotainment
- Doesn’t handle like the Germans
- Cramped rear seat
