Summary
Upon its release, the Ioniq 5 immediately stole the hearts of journalists and the public alike, and won numerous awards including Motor Trend’s “SUV of the Year” and Car & Driver’s “EV of the Year” trophies…and then the next year, its Ioniq 6 platform mate won the latter award again. With a cool design, practical and thoughtful ergonomics, well-tuned driving dynamics, and bleeding edge battery technology, it’s little wonder that the Ioniq twins cleaned house.
The Ioniq family (and its siblings, the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60) are among only a handful of EVs on an “800V” architecture, and they’re the only ones that aren’t high-end luxury cars (notable others include the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air). This allows the Ioniq 5 to charge at obscene speeds should you find a charger that can support them, blitzing past competition like the Mustang Mach-E and ID.4 to gain 100 miles of range in a mere 8-10 minutes in ideal conditions.
If the Ioniq 5 has any faults, it’s that its driving dynamics don’t quite match up with its cool looks. Enthusiasts will likely be more happy with a Mustang Mach-E. The lack of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a bit of a bummer too, though likely not a dealbreaker for most. Approach it as a comfortable cruiser and not a canyon-carver and you’ll be more than satisfied.
